Enlargement of Schengen Area
Hi all,
i just got the reply from Europe Direct about Schengen area enlargement, any of you who are interested in travelling around Europe may want to have a look... (this info is particular for Poland... coz i personally want to go to Poland in the very soon future~)
The enlargement of the Schengen area was discussed recently ( 8-9 November 2007) at the 2827th Council meeting (Justice and Home Affairs) in Brussels.
The Council concluded that the necessary conditions for the application of the Schengen acquis have been met in all areas (air, land and sea borders, police cooperation, the Schengen information system, data protection and visa issuance) in nine Member States: Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. After the endorsement of the European Parliament, the EU is expected to abolish checks at internal land and sea borders (and air borders by March 2008) on 21 December 2007. People will be able to move freely, without checks, within an area expanded to 3.6 million km2, the Schengen area.

As the expected membership of Poland in the Schengen area is still an ongoing process, it is not yet possible to draw any officially binding conclusions. However, you can get familiar with the current rights of a third country national legally residing in one Schengen Member State, who wants to travel to another Schengen Member State, at the following website of the Directorate General (DG) for Freedom, Security and Justice:
